GoDaddy-Owned Entities That Can Buy and Hold Domain Assets as a Portfolio | GoDaddy Inc. operates through various subsidiaries and divisions that manage domain assets. The key entities involved in buying and holding domain portfolios are:
GoDaddy.com, LLC
This is the primary registrar arm of GoDaddy, handling domain name registrations for customers worldwide. It’s the entity most people interact with when buying domains directly and can hold domains as part of its registrar services.
GoDaddy Registry (formerly Neustar Registry, acquired in 2020)
This division operates as a registry, managing top-level domains (TLDs) like .club, .design, and others. It can acquire and hold domain assets at the registry level, distinct from the registrar function. The 2020 acquisition of Neustar’s registry business for $218 million marked GoDaddy’s shift into owning and operating TLDs directly.
Uniregistry (acquired in 2020)
GoDaddy acquired Uniregistry’s registrar and marketplace operations, along with a portfolio of over 350,000 domain names. While the registry portion of Uniregistry stayed separate, the acquired registrar entity now under GoDaddy can manage domain portfolios.
Afternic (acquired in 2013)
A domain marketplace under GoDaddy, Afternic facilitates the buying and selling of premium domains. It holds domains for resale as part of its portfolio strategy, integrated into GoDaddy’s broader ecosystem.
NameFind (acquired in 2013 from NameMedia)
This is GoDaddy’s domain investment arm, specifically focused on acquiring and holding large portfolios of domains for resale or strategic purposes. It’s a key player in managing GoDaddy’s aftermarket domain assets.
These entities collectively allow GoDaddy to buy, hold, and manage domain portfolios, either for customers (via the registrar) or as proprietary assets (via the registry, marketplace, or NameFind).
History of ICM Registry - PORN AKA XXX GoDaddy Acquisition in 2020: GoDaddy’s Registry division acquired MMX’s assets, including ICM Registry and .xxx, as part of a $120 million deal that also included .club, .design, and 28 other TLDs. This folded ICM into GoDaddy Registry, though it’s not always branded distinctly anymore. Today, .xxx is operated by GoDaddy Registry, making GoDaddy the steward of this adult-focused TLD.
